The challenge

Comprehensive outpatient care by professional services is coming under increasing pressure with the arrival of the baby boomers. Even today, not all requests can be met by professional care services. As a result, outpatient care for the elderly and people with disabilities can no longer be provided and supported for the first few people, and the trend is going upwards. Independence, especially by living in their own home for as long as possible, is very important for the people in need of support. These people are often supported by their relatives. Unfortunately, they usually have little time and are generally unable to fully meet the needs of those in need of support. However, the alternative of inpatient living in a nursing home or retirement home is also only available to a limited number of people. A different approach is therefore needed to relieve the current system, provide those in need of support with appropriate assistance, allow relatives to concentrate on the essentials and deploy the capacities of outpatient care services in a targeted manner where their expertise is most needed.

Possible solutions

An optimal solution would relieve the burden on all those affected and enable people to live in their own homes for as long as possible with the support of smart homes and smart sensors. Smart sensors would be installed in the home to support people in operating their home and, if necessary, take over individual tasks on their behalf (smart) and give relatives and care services the certainty that the person is doing well by regularly collecting and analysing data. Data such as:

    • Water consumption - drinking, toilet flushing
    • Motion detectors or contact detectors on the doors/windows
    • Case sensors

Supporting people and giving them the certainty that the person in need of support is doing well.

Boundary Conditions

    • Compatible with German data protection regulations (GDPR)
    • Open interface for connecting other systems
    • Easy to use for people with little to no digital skills
    • Server in the EU is an advantage
