What is Startup BW Pre-Seed?
Startup BW Pre-Seed is a funding instrument of the state of Baden-Württemberg for startups in the early stages to support them with a favourable loan with a conversion option. The application for the loan of between €50,000 and €200,000 can only be accompanied by accredited partners. In addition, each startup requires a co-investor who will contribute 20 % of the application amount. The remaining 80 % are covered by the state of Baden-Württemberg via the L-Bank.

What criteria must my start-up meet?
The following criteria, amongst others, apply for funding through Startup BW Pre-Seed:

- 50%: The founders must live in Baden-Württemberg.
- Your business model is innovative, growth-oriented and scalable.
- The entry in the commercial register was made no more than five years ago.
- No dividends have yet been paid out.
- You will be supported by an accredited support partner, such as innoWerft.
- You have a co-investor who is contributing 20 % to the funding. In certain cases, innoWerft may also take on this role.
How much is the Startup BW pre-seed funding?
Through Startup BW Pre-Seed, it is generally possible to apply for funding of between 50,000 and 200,000 euros. In certain cases, funding of up to 400,000 euros is also possible. The higher funding amount is more demanding and is not available to every start-up. The exact amount of funding depends on your start-up’s individual capital requirements and planned development stages.
Is Startup BW Pre-Seed a grant or a loan?
Startup BW Pre-Seed is a low-interest convertible loan. Under certain conditions, this can later be converted into an equity stake in the company.
Do I need a co-investor?
Yes. A prerequisite for Startup BW pre-seed funding is a co-investor who contributes 20 per cent of the funding. The remaining 80 per cent is provided by L-Bank as part of the funding programme. For standard funding of up to 200,000 euros, the co-investor’s contribution is up to 40,000 euros. For funding of up to 400,000 euros, the co-investment contribution is up to 80,000 euros.

Yes. If your start-up fits our investment focus, we can act not only as an accredited mentoring partner but also as a co-investor.

We’ll guide you every step of the way, from the initial assessment through to the application process, the pitch to the selection panel and right up to the end of the contract period. How does the application and selection process work at Startup BW Pre-Seed?
The application and selection process consists of several stages:
- Open Pitch: Submit your pitch deck via the Application form on our website . During an initial meeting, we’ll get to know you and your start-up, and together we’ll assess whether Startup BW Pre-Seed is the right source of funding for your project.
- Preparing your application: If you are eligible for Startup BW Pre-Seed, we will help you prepare your application. Together, we will compile all the necessary documents and check that you meet the eligibility criteria – including securing a suitable co-investment. In certain cases, innoWerft may take on this role itself.
- Pitch to the decision-making panel: You will then present your start-up to the central selection panel of Startup BW Pre-Seed. The panel meets five times a year on fixed dates. If your application is successful, you can submit the official funding application.
- Application and approval: The grant application is submitted digitally to L-Bank. Once it has been successfully assessed and approved, we will support you throughout the entire contract period as an accredited support partner.
How long does the decision-making process take?
The length of the decision-making process depends, amongst other things, on the stage of development of your start-up, the status of your application documents and the schedule of the central selection panel. The selection panel meets five times a year on fixed dates. Following an initial meeting, you will receive prompt feedback on whether Startup BW Pre-Seed is, in principle, suitable for your project.
We will then assist you in preparing the application documents and guiding you through the rest of the selection process. Once the selection panel has given its approval, the formal application will be submitted to L-Bank, which will then decide whether to grant the funding.
