A proof of concept (PoC) is an early, often technical or conceptual demonstration that shows that an idea, technology or solution is, in principle, feasible in practice.
In the start-up context, a PoC serves to validate the feasibility of a business idea before significant resources are invested in full-scale product development.
The focus of a PoC is not on a finished product, but on answering the key question:
- „Can that actually work?“
Typical objectives of a PoC are:
- demonstrate technical feasibility
- Test the basic functionality of a solution
- validate key assumptions
- Identifying risks at an early stage
- Building trust with investors or stakeholders
A PoC can take various forms, for example:
- a simple technical prototype
- a simulation or test environment
- limited proof of functionality
- an experimental setup using real data
- an internal pilot project
Unlike an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), a PoC focuses more on technical or conceptual feasibility, whereas an MVP already involves real users and market feedback.
The advantages of a PoC are:
- early risk reduction
- lower development costs compared with complete products
- a basis for making investment decisions more quickly
- better communication with stakeholders
- greater credibility with investors
For start-ups, a PoC is particularly important in the early stages, as many ideas initially exist only in theory and need to be validated before scaling makes sense.
At the same time, a PoC also has its limitations:
- not a market-ready product
- limited insight into user acceptance
- often not scalable or stable
- The focus is not on UX or design
Typically, the PoC is the first step in an iterative development process, which then progresses to prototypes and MVPs.
innoWerft helps start-up founders to validate technical and business assumptions at an early stage, set up proof-of-concepts (PoCs) effectively, and use these to make sound decisions for further product development.
