What are metrics?

Metrics are quantitative indicators that companies – particularly start-ups – use to measure and analyse their business performance, the effectiveness of their strategies and their progress towards defined goals.

They provide a data-driven basis for decision-making and help to objectively highlight developments within the company.

Typical areas in which metrics are used include:

  • Finance (e.g. turnover, profit, burn rate)
  • Marketing (e.g. conversion rate, customer acquisition cost)
  • Product usage (e.g. active users, engagement rate)
  • Sales (e.g. pipeline volume, conversion rate)
  • Customer behaviour (e.g. retention, churn rate)

Metrics can generally be divided into various categories:

  • Descriptive metrics: describe the current status (e.g. current number of users)
  • Diagnostic metrics: explain the causes (e.g. why users leave the site)
  • Predictive metrics: help to predict future developments
  • Key performance indicators (KPIs): particularly important, target-oriented metrics

The main benefit of metrics lies in enabling better management of organisations:

  • objective assessment of the company’s performance
  • early identification of problems or opportunities
  • better allocation of resources
  • Support for strategic decision-making
  • Transparency for investors and stakeholders

Metrics are particularly important for start-ups, as they operate in a dynamic environment and need to find out quickly whether their assumptions about the market, product and customers are correct.

Key principles for working with metrics are:

  • Focus on a few relevant key figures rather than being overwhelmed by data
  • a clear link to the company’s objectives
  • regular monitoring and reporting
  • A combination of quantitative and qualitative insights

Metrics form the basis for data-driven working and are closely linked to concepts such as KPIs, analytics and growth hacking.
