The product life cycle describes the various stages a product goes through, from its launch to a possible decline in demand.<\/p>\n

The model helps companies and start-ups to better assess a product\u2019s current market position and to make appropriate decisions regarding marketing, pricing, sales and further development.<\/p>\n

Typically, the product life cycle consists of five phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Phase<\/strong><\/td>\nTypical characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n
Introduction<\/strong><\/td>\nThe product is new to the market. Brand awareness, sales volume and turnover are low to begin with.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Growth<\/strong><\/td>\nDemand is rising, new customers are being attracted and the first competitors are entering the market.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Maturity<\/strong><\/td>\nThe product is well established. Growth is slowing and competition is increasing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Saturation<\/strong><\/td>\nThe market has largely been exhausted. Sales are stagnating or beginning to fall.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Decline<\/strong><\/td>\nDemand is falling significantly, for example as a result of new technologies or changes in customers\u2019 needs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

During the introductory phase, the focus is often on the following tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Building brand awareness<\/li>\n
  • Attract your first customers<\/li>\n
  • Gathering feedback from the market<\/li>\n
  • Improving the product and its positioning<\/li>\n
  • test suitable distribution channels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    During the growth phase, the main focus is on:<\/p>\n

    • To expand production and sales structures<\/li>\n
    • to tap into new target groups or markets<\/li>\n
    • to strengthen the brand<\/li>\n
    • to differentiate the offering from that of competitors<\/li>\n
    • to meet rising demand reliably<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      During the maturity and saturation phases, companies can, for example:<\/p>\n

      • develop new features<\/li>\n
      • Offer product variants<\/li>\n
      • Adjusting prices and business models<\/li>\n
      • reach out to additional target groups<\/li>\n
      • Optimising processes and costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The product life cycle is not the same for every product. Some products remain successful for many years, whilst others are quickly replaced by new technologies, trends or offerings.<\/p>\n

        Even a decline does not automatically mean that a product has to be discontinued. The product life cycle can be extended through further development, repositioning or the expansion into new markets.<\/p>\n
