The reason for this is often that a great deal of resources have already been invested, and they do not want these investments to have been \u201ein vain\u201c.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunk costs are costs that have already been incurred and cannot be recovered. These include, for example:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>development costs already paid<\/li>\n<li>time spent working<\/li>\n<li>completed marketing campaigns<\/li>\n<li>non-refundable fees<\/li>\n<li>Costs associated with unsuccessful prototypes<\/li>\n<li>Expenditure on technologies that are no longer usable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These past costs should not be a determining factor in making a rational decision. What is far more important is the future expenditure involved and the future benefits that can realistically be expected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A start-up has already invested 150,000 euros in developing a product. The start-up should therefore assess whether further investment makes economic and strategic sense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical signs of the sunk cost fallacy are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>A project is being continued solely because of the investment made so far<\/li>\n<li>Negative feedback from customers is repeatedly ignored<\/li>\n<li>Initial assumptions are not revised, despite new findings<\/li>\n<li>Those responsible do not wish to acknowledge a previous decision as a mistake<\/li>\n<li>Additional resources are being deployed without clear performance criteria<\/li>\n<li>Giving up is generally equated with failure<\/li>\n<li>Alternative solutions are no longer assessed objectively<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fallacy can be particularly problematic in start-ups. Time, capital and human resources are usually limited. Clinging to an unsuitable product or business model can shorten the financial runway and prevent more promising opportunities from being pursued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sunk cost fallacy can occur, amongst other things, in the following situations:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>the development of a product for which there is no demand<\/li>\n<li>ineffective marketing or sales channels<\/li>\n<li>inappropriate corporate partnerships<\/li>\n<li>outdated technical solutions<\/li>\n<li>unprofitable client projects<\/li>\n<li>unsuitable staff or service providers<\/li>\n<li>expansion into an unattractive market<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start-ups can minimise decision-making errors by taking the following measures:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>define clear success and termination criteria in advance<\/li>\n<li>Review decisions regularly on the basis of up-to-date data<\/li>\n<li>assess future costs and benefits separately from past investments<\/li>\n<li>Take on board feedback from customers and external experts<\/li>\n<li>compare different courses of action with one another<\/li>\n<li>Clearly define responsibilities for the assessment<\/li>\n<li>Viewing pivots or project cancellations as part of the learning process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A useful check question is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we were to start this project again today, armed with the knowledge we have now, would we do so?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the answer is \u2018No\u2019, you should consider whether an adjustment, a pivot or a complete withdrawal would be more appropriate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every decision to continue with a difficult project automatically constitutes a sunk cost fallacy. Some projects take longer than expected or only yield results in the long term.
