The problem to be solved<\/h2>\n

In an increasingly digital age, the challenges of loneliness and isolation among elderly individuals living alone have become more pronounced. Recognizing this pressing need for connection and support, innovative solutions ideas like an app \u201cVAL Solidarity\u201d have emerged to potentially address these concerns head-on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Living conditions with near to no public transport and a challenging topography don\u2019t allow to leave home and meet at public places. Often, even the last bar ceased to exist in the village years before, and church services take place fare away. The younger family members left the village for working and living elsewhere.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elderly and disabled people are \u201cleft over\u201d without food for soul and mind. Under these conditions mental and physical health deteriorates more and more. People are trapped into a vicious circle.<\/span><\/p>\n

The context<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Lastovo Island, located in the Adriatic Sea approximately 65 nautical miles away from the Croatian mainland. With around 800 residents, many of whom are elderly, the island’s distance from mainland services makes it hard for people, especially the older ones, to access necessary facilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main problems leading to social isolation among the elderly on Lastovo Island are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Distance from Services: Lastovo’s location far from the mainland means elderly residents have trouble reaching healthcare, social services, and fun activities. It’s even harder for those who can’t move around easily due to limited transportation options.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Declining Population: Lastovo has a small and aging population. This makes it difficult to set up programs or activities that cater to the needs of the elderly, leading to fewer chances for socializing and support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Safety Issues: Elderly people are more at risk of accidents or medical emergencies. But Lastovo’s limited resources mean it’s not easy to provide quick help during emergencies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    For the elderly, loneliness can lead to a decline in mental and physical well-being, impacting their ability to engage in daily activities and seek out services they may need. This means that the button should still be functional and able to trigger an alert, regardless of whether the device is connected to the internet or a cellular network.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

Whether we’re using cloud-based systems or ones that are right on our computers, we want them to be easy to use and not too expensive.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Lastovo Island has multiple internet providers, offering good coverage in areas where people live. Plus, there are a few WiFi hotspots in public places around the island. This means that residents and visitors can easily get online and stay connected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        The problem to be solved:<\/h2>\r\nPaperless, digital monitoring and reporting solution for social services provision, which relieves the burden and saves time on social service providers and users. It enables individual and summary real-time records and overview of the provided social service, aggregation of data for reporting.\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

        The context:<\/h3>\r\nTech goal is to create an app which will help social service providers (CPUK) better, digital, more up-to-date, and faster keeping records of the provision of social services. Currently, information about the provided service is collected in paper form - Geronto housekeepers keep their own records, collect signatures from social service beneficiaries and then submit all papers to the CPUK monthly. After that, the data is processed, and a summary report is made. Also, manual data processing takes a lot of resources from CPUK. The whole monitoring-reporting process set up in this way is not agile enough - a full overview of the provided service is visible only at the end of the month, which greatly reduces the possibility of faster and more up-to-date monitoring and response to possible challenges when providing the service, and it also slows the reporting that CPUK is obliged to do to other stakeholders.\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

        Relevance:<\/h3>\r\n

        \"Bild<\/h2>\r\nA digitized process of monitoring and reporting on the provided social service would greatly reduce the workload of individual CPUK employees, especially the director. A more up-to-date overview of the service provision would also allow optimization and possible quick reactions when the service provision needs to be changed - for example, the assignment of additional Geronto-housekeepers to certain users or in the absence of a certain Geronto-housekeepers, review of individual and total workload of Geronto-housekeepers, review of the situation and comparison with contractual obligations for each individual beneficiary of social services, etc.\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

        1. Low level of digital literacy of Geronto-housekeepers Implement - user-friendly on-boarding process for Geronto-housekeepers, offer training sessions, and provide ongoing tech support to address any challenges or concerns, user friendly GUI\/app.<\/li>\r\n \t
        2. Procurement of digital tools \u2013 or other devices which will be used to monitor the provision of the social service should be durable, connectable to the internet.<\/li>\r\n \t
        3. The data to be collected should be easy to manage, processable, searchable and comparable.<\/li>\r\n \t

          • The application enables planning and (generates) the weekly schedule of Geronto-housekeepers per user (considering the contracted service depending on the user) and turns it into a weekly work order.<\/li>\r\n \t
          • After each provided service, Geronto-housekeepers register in a few clicks which services, at what time and with which user they provided the service.<\/li>\r\n \t
          • After the Geronto-housekeepers record the provision of the service, users can confirm and sign on the spot which service they received.<\/li>\r\n \t
          • The collected and signed data are automatically stored online and are searchable - they can be easily selected by different categories like user, type of service provided, date, Geronto-housekeeper that provided the service, etc.<\/li>\r\n \t
          • The application can also generate (local or online) summary data according to the previously mentioned categories (e.g., total time of service duration for one user or overall, type of service provided, etc.).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\u00a0\r\n
