Today, the term is primarily used to describe fast-growing private companies with an exceptionally high valuation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The classification as a \u2018unicorn\u2019 is usually based on the valuation agreed between the start-up and its investors during a funding round. A company\u2019s valuation is based on expectations for the future and can change significantly. Key factors include turnover, customer loyalty, profitability, liquidity and a business model that is sustainable in the long term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most start-ups, therefore, achieving \u2018unicorn\u2019 status should not be the primary goal.
