The English term literally means\u00a0<strong>Shareholders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In German, the term \u2018shareholder\u2019 is often used interchangeably with \u2018Aktion\u00e4r:innen\u2019. Aktion\u00e4r:innen hold shares in a public limited company. In the case of start-ups organised as a GmbH, however, the term usually refers to shareholders who hold shares in the company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical shareholders in a start-up are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Founders:inside<\/li>\n<li>Business Angels<\/li>\n<li>Venture capital investors<\/li>\n<li>Corporate venture capital units<\/li>\n<li>Employees who hold shares in the company<\/li>\n<li>strategic business partners<\/li>\n<li>Family Offices<\/li>\n<li>publicly owned companies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shareholders often provide capital to a company and receive a percentage stake in return. Investors can, for example, agree on specific rights of approval, information or liquidation. Shares with no voting rights, or with restricted voting rights, are also possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shareholders can be more than just financial backers for start-ups. Experienced investors often provide additional support by:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>strategic knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Contacts with potential customers<\/li>\n<li>Access to further investors<\/li>\n<li>Industry knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Support with funding rounds<\/li>\n<li>Experience in setting up businesses<\/li>\n<li>Preparing for growth or an exit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, differing interests may arise amongst the shareholders. Founders may wish to grow the business in the long term, whilst investors may be looking to sell or achieve a quick return.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical challenges include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>differing expectations regarding growth and exit<\/li>\n<li>Conflicts arising from strategic decisions<\/li>\n<li>increasing coordination processes<\/li>\n<li>Dilution of existing shares<\/li>\n<li>Restriction of the founders\u2019 freedom to make decisions<\/li>\n<li>unclear roles and responsibilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When bringing on board new investors, founders should therefore not focus solely on the amount of investment on offer.
